The Hawks travelled east to take on the two closest challengers for first place in the Tri-State Western Division, the Northern Ohio Baseball and Chardon Blizzard. The Hawks needed a good showing to clinch the division and assure a spot in the Conference Tournament.
The College Hawks were back in action at Mercy Field on July 4th with a doubleheader against the Cleveland Select team.
Game 1 – Again the home team received a quality pitching performance as Travis Mielcarek (Sienna Heights) went the distance in the 9-0 victory. Travis gave up only 4 hits with 0 base on balls and 3 K’s. The offense was a little slow out of the gate but scored a run in the third followed by 3 runs in the 4th and 5 additional runs in the fifth to eliminate any doubt. The offense was led by Matt Vannett (BGSU) 2/2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Ryan Williams (Tiffin) chipped in 1 for 2 with 2 RBI.
Game 2 – The fireworks were flying in this one from the beginning as Sam Fischer (Adrian) led off with a bomb to deep center and the Hawks went on to score 3 additional runs in the first and 3 more in the second to take a commanding lead. Staked with the 7-0 lead, Kelly Barnes (Bluffton) shut down the visitors on 3 hits and 1 earned run. Fischer led the offense 2/2 with a triple to go with his HR, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Zack Kolvey (Adrian) contributed a big 2 run single as the offense banged out 10 hits.
The Hawks will be back in action 7/7 in a televised game on BCSN at Mercy Field to take on the Chardon Blizzard.
