College Hawks Update 7/1/2012

After starting a blistering 16-1 in the Tri-State League the Hawks travelled east to Youngstown Ohio to face the Ohio Glaciers at Pemberton Park. 

Game one started out as a pitcher’s duel as the score was knotted at 0 -0 after 4 inning. Brent Greenwood (Adrian College) was on the hill for the Hawks and had thrown a 1-hitter through four. The Hawks had several chances as they left runners on base in each of the first four innings. The Hawks made a pitching change to start the bottom of the fifth and the Glaciers broke through to score 7 runs on 3 hits, three walks, two hit batters and an error. The Hawks did score a run in the 6th inning to avert the shutout but the final score ended at 8-1. The Hawks outhit the Glaciers 7 to 4 and were led at the plate by Matt Vannett (BGSU) and Fred Sharp (BGSU) who were both 2 for 3.

Game two started off on a completely different note as Sam Fischer (Adrian College) led off with a double and Blake Schmenk (Findlay University) followed with a triple to drive in the first run. After a Sac Fly brought home Schmenk, Matt Vannett connected for his 7th bomb of the year to make the score 3-0 after the top of one. The Glaciers scored 2 in the bottom of the first to keep the score close. After the Hawks scored 1 in the top of the second, Zak Esposito (OwensCC) made the 4-2 lead stand up through the 4th inning. The Glaciers broke through in the bottom of the sixth after a Hawks pitching change for 4 runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Hawks fought back and scored a run in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-5 with the bases loaded and one out. The Glaciers then turned a game ending double play to sweep the two games. The Hawks again outhit the Glaciers by a 10-7 count but 5 walks and three errors allowed the home team to take the win. The Hawks were led at the plate by Matt Vannett 2/3 with 1 RBI and JJ Buckey who was 2/3 with 2 RBI.

The Hawks then travelled to the Cleveland area to take on the Cleveland Select at Independence High School.

Game one saw the Hawks jump to a 6-0 lead after 2 innings and never looking back. The final score was Hawks 10 – Cleveland Select-0. Kelly Barnes (Bluffton University) was in complete control allowing 6 hits but 0 walks. The offense was led  Sam Fischer (Adrian College) 2/4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI, JJ Buckey ( Ohio Wesleyan) 2/4 with 1 run scored and two bombs off the bats of Matt Vannett (BGSU) and Matt Pitzulo (BGSU) for a total of 5RBI between the two BGSU players. The Hawks received hits from all the position players and totaled 12 hits on the game.

Game two started out basically the same way as the Hawks opened up a 7-0 lead after 2 innings. John Masin (BGSU) threw 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 run in getting the win. The offense again brought the sticks as they had 14 hits and received 9 walks resulting in 11 runs. Matt Vannett (2/2) and JJ Buckey (1/4) both went deep and contributed 5 RBI between the two of them. There were several batters that were 2/3 on the day Blake Schmenk (Findlay), Ryan Williams (Tiffin) and Zack Michael (Toledo).

The Hawks will be back in action Tuesday night at Bowman field for a Toledo League game, 6pm,  and then again on Wednesday for a 4th of July Doubleheader against Cleveland select at Mercy field starting at 1pm.
