College Hawks Update 7/15/2012

The Hawks travelled east to take on the two closest challengers for first place in the Tri-State Western Division, the Northern Ohio Baseball and Chardon Blizzard. The Hawks needed a good showing to clinch the division and assure a spot in the Conference Tournament.

July 14, 2012 Game One at Northern Ohio Baseball

This game belonged to the Hawks from the very beginning as the visitors brought their bats and the pitchers brought their arms. Brent Greenwood (Adrian) started on the hill for the Hawks and did not give up a base hit until the 4th inning. By that time he was staked to an 11-0 lead as the Hawks scored in very inning. The final tally showed 15-0 with 19 hits for the Hawks. Every position player contributed with at least one hit. The offensive leaders were Austin Achter (Ohio State) who was 4 for 4 with a double, triple and 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. Ryan Williams (Tiffin) was 2/3 with 3 RBI and Fred Sharp (BGSU) was 2/3 with 3 runs scored.  The 19 hits included 4 doubles and two triples. Jimmie Shaw (Lake Erie) came in to pitch one inning and closed it out.

July 14, 2012 Game Two at Northern Ohio Baseball

The home team jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one as the Hawks defense let them down and gave up an unearned run. The lead did not last long as the Hawks put the pressure on and Stephen Yant (Defiance)   had a huge base hit to drive in two runs as the Hawks took the lead. Travis Mielcarek (Sienna Heights) was on the mound and kept the home team off balance for 4 innings giving up 2 unearned runs and 6 hits. Jason Moulton (Ohio) came in to pitch the final three innings and allowed 1 hit with 2 base on balls but kept Northern Ohio off of the scoreboard. The Hawks scored two runs in the 4th with clutch RBI hits from Matt Pitzulo (BGSU) and Zack Kolvey (Adrian). The final was 4-2 as the Hawks headed to Chardon with the division lead on the line.

July15, 2012 Game One at Chardon Blizzard

The Hawks needed one win and did they come ready to play as the offense exploded for 9 runs in the first two innings. Matt Vannett (BGSU) led the way with two home runs. Austin Achter and Sam Fischer (Adrian) also chipped in with home runs and Jeff Davis (OwensCC) allowed 1 run in four innings of work. Alex Ricica (Franklin College) came on to throw the final three innings and allowed 1 run also. Offensively Matt Vannett was 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 6 RBI. The team totaled 17 hits in the 16-2 win that wrapped up the West Division title.

July 15, 2012 Game Two at Chardon Blizzard

Game two was just the opposite for the Hawks as the game was a pitchers battle with the score tied 1 to 1 through five innings of play. Sam Fischer hit a line drive home run to the opposite field to take the lead 2-1 but the home team erupted for 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth. John Fortunato (Case Western) took the tough loss giving up 4 earned runs, 6 hits and issuing 3 base on balls. Offensively Fischer led the Hawks 2/3 with the HR, 1 RBI and 1 RS. 

The Hawks now have an overall record of 37 wins and 6 losses. In the Tri – State league the record stands at 26 wins and 5 losses with 4 league games remaining.
