Toledo Team Defeats League Rival Genoa In First Game

August 4, 2011 - Matched up against the Genoa Rampage in Pool "A" of the 2011 NABF World Series, the Toledo Hawks "Gold" dispatched their Tri-State rival by a 12-3 score in their first game.  The Hawks made things "right" with the hot stick of rightfielder Blake Schmenk, who smacked four hits in jump-starting the offense, and cruised to victory behind the workmanlike pitching of right-hander Brett Kuebler, who worked six innings while allowing the three Genoa runs.

Team Adds Tri-State Title to Accomplishments

Toledo Hawks "Gold" made a makeup trip on Saturday, July 30 to Ravenna, Ohio.  With a sweep in this doubleheader - two games being replayed after a cancelled double-dip from the previous weekend - the team could lay claim to the top spot in the Tri-State Collegiate Baseball League for the 2011 season.  With Eric Croak (Toledo/Toledo) presenting a home run-derby level performance in game one, and Mattie DeDoes (Oberlin/Ann Arbor, MI) providing the offensive and the pitching theatrics in game two, the Gold Hawks flew over the Ravenna Arsenal on their way to 14-1 and 9-5 victories, and wrapped their talons around this season's Tri-State crown.  The Gold Hawks now find themselves in the enviable position of accepting one of two bids they earned to the 2011 NABF World Series, having clinched the title in the Toledo Amateur League as well.

3-0 Week in Local League Clinches First Place

Playing games on three consecutive nights, the Toledo Hawks "Gold" Team raised its unblemished Toledo Amateur Baseball League record to ten wins, no losses - and in doing so, clinched first place in the league for the 2011 season.  The championship cements the team's bid to the 2011 NABF World Series.  On Tuesday night, July 26, the Gold Hawks trounced the Black Swamp by a 11-0 score; they followed the next night with a 8-0 blanking of Bedford.  Then, in Thursday night's contest, the second "Hawk-on-Hawk" game of 2011 went to the Golden Boys, as Hawks "Gold" beat Hawks "Black" by a 3-2 margin.

Gold Hawks Take Two In Final Road Trip

After Saturday rains cancelled two games across Ohio in Ravenna, the Toledo Gold Hawks made the trip Sunday to Strongsville to play a doubleheader against Tri-State rival Ohio Northern.  Though the bats started slowly, the pitching held up and the rain held off - and the Hawks held up their side of the bargain for those fans that made the trip.  The Hawks won the opening contest 3-1, and then held off the Northerners late in the second game to prevail by a 7-5 margin.

RyanFirst baseman Ryan Hotmer has always been known for his bat, a bat packed with more punch than an Olympic boxer.

Hotmer is now seeking a way to pack his punch with wood bats while playing for the summer collegiate Toledo Black Hawks in the Toledo Amateur Baseball Federation.

A 2010 Lake graduate, Hotmer smashed a team record 15 home runs during his three-year varsity career and finished his senior season with seven home runs and was a dominating presence on the mound, recording a 6-3 record with a 1.74 ERA in 52.1 innings pitched for the Flyers.
