After coming off a split with the Michigan Monarchs on Thursday the Gold team hosted Shannon Fence on Saturday and Canton Terriers on Sunday at Carter Park in Bowling Green. Gold dropped the first game to Shannon Fence 2 to 9, but came back to win the second game of the double header 9 to 5. Gold then came back on Sunday and swept Canton Terriers 5 to 3 in both games.
In the first game against Shannon, Gold couldn’t get their sticks going as they only had two hits by Brian Bilius and Jake Cappeletty for the offense. Shannon racked up 9 hits to score their 9 runs. Gold came back strong in the second game with 8 hits. In the first inning Kyle O’Connell led off with a single and was moved around the bases by Brian Bilius. Cory Hornyak then hit a hard shot single to score both O’Connell and Bilius to put Gold on the board with two runs.
In the third inning Bilius led off with a walk and was advanced with a single by Casey Winckowski. Hornyak then moved the runners when he reached first on a second baseman error. Bret Howard then hit a line drive and scored Bilus and Winckowski with his single. Eric Yunker recorded an RBI for the 4th run of the inning. Gold scored again with one run in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th inning. Nate White had a strong performance and went the full distance on the mound for a complete game. Nate had 2 strike outs with two walks.
On Sunday Kyle O’Connell and Brad Timofeev split the pitching duties and held the Terriers to 3 runs. Gold scored their first run in the first inning with the help of 4 walks by the Terriers. In the second, hits by Colin Meinzer and Tristen Peffley helped with two additional runs. The remaining two runs came with the assistance on hits by V. Helldobler, Jake Cappeletty, Bret Howard, and Eric Yunker.
In the second game Gold scored four of their five runs in the second inning after Hornyak started the inning off with a triple. Winckowski reached base on an error and Eric Yunker then slammed a double to score Winckowski. Yunker scored while Molton was up on a wild pitch. Meinzer then walked and Adam Yunker hit a deep shot over the center fielder for a double to score Meinzer. Brian Bilius ended the day 2 for 3 with two singles and Eric Yunker did the same with two doubles.
Gold heads into this week’s competition with a 25 and 10 overall record.
