Gold continued to extend their dominance over the Tri-State League on Sunday when they rolled past Shannon Fence with a 5-3 victory.
It was another day at the office for starting pitcher Colin Meinzer. Meinzer cruised through all seven innings allowing only three earned runs while striking out three and adding another CG to his resume for the season.
Gold struck first in the bottom half of the first when Adam Yunker came home on a Fence throwing error that allowed Casey Winckowski to reach base. Gold quickly added another in the second. Tristen Peffley reached first on a passed ball and stole second to get into scoring position. Two batters later Corey Lehman brought him home with an RBI single.
Meinzer allowed his first run in the top of the fourth, but it was quickly made up for as Gold tacked on one as well. Eric Yunker singled and moved to third on Ben Kauder’s single. Peffley got the RBI on a ground out to shortstop to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead after four.
Gold had its biggest inning in the fifth, but had a little help from the sun. With a man on first and two outs, Brett Howard hit a deep fly ball to right, but what seemed to be a routine catch and an end to the inning. The right fielder however lost the ball in the sun allowing Drew Kuns to score from first and give Howard an RBI stand-up double. Déjà vu happened the very next batter, as Winckowski hit another fly ball to right, which the right fielder lost in the sun, dropping in for an RBI single to give Gold a commanding 5-1 lead with two innings to play.
Meinzer allowed a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but sealed off the game and Gold’s first place finish in Tri-State League play.
Gold’s next game will be Monday against Monarchs Blue as teams begin to wrap up the Toledo league and finalize their spots for post-season play.
